Not the best quality, but…

Fast Tube by Casper

It’s better than most of the recordings taken when she sang this at the March on Washington. Gives me goosebumps every time.

Week One

After much thoughtful consideration and evaluation, here is the the inaugural album for the 2011 Dreambox Music Project: Teen Dream by Beach House, on the reccommendation of a good friend in Blacksburg who co-hosts a radio show on WUVT (so his taste in music can’t suck too badly, right?).

Actually, it was less thoughtful consideration and evaluation and more that he gave me a copy of the album. Regardless, I’m excited to kick off the project and the week with it – which according to Wikipedia falls under the “dream pop” category, whatever that means. I did Google the band and album, but I’m going to hold off on really reading about them until later in the week. I had originally planned on just giving my uninfluenced thoughts on each album at the end of the week, which I’ll still subject you to, but I’d also like to know the background and context of what I’m listening to.

If you want to follow along, I’ve created a Grooveshark account specifically for this project. Each week I’ll add new tunes, and I encourage everyone that’s reading to listen along with me.

Thanks for all of your suggestions – I’m looking forward to listening to all of them! And with that, let the tune-age commence.

Music Project update

Thank you for all of your suggestions! This is definitely off to a strong start. Stay tuned for project kickoff on Monday. Also, I’m going to create a Grooveshark account for this project, so you all can listen to the albums with me and hopefully add your commentary as well. I’ll post more information about that on Monday.

Thanks for letting me mooch off of your tunes, everyone!

My belated resolution

And no, it does not involve getting my thighs under control.

Since graduating from college I’ve pretty much sucked at finding new music. Partly because my iTunes library is in shambles and in need of serious organization, and every time I open my library I take one look at all of those songs labeled “Track 1” and I am immediately overcome with the desire to uninstall iTunes and never look at my horrible, disorganized library of songs again. And partly because I don’t walk around campus or ride the bus with my iPod firmly implanted in my ears anymore and that makes me less inclined to need new music to act as a shield from people who might want to interact with me.

But that’s all about to change, with your help, dear reader. Starting next week, on Monday, January 17, I will launch my very official (you know, since I slapped together a logo and all) music project. With your recommendations, I will listen to one album a week for the next year and share my highly uneducated opinions about the music with all of you. I’m hoping that you all will have a pretty diverse collective taste in music, which should keep this interesting. There are no limits or rules as to what kind of music I’ll accept for this project,* so bring it on! The only ground rules for the project are that I need an entire album (no “Greatest Hits” crap, because that’s lame) and if I already own it, I won’t include it as part of the project.

I will also tackle the monumental task of organizing my iTunes library. Even though the thought of it is already making me want to cry. But hey, isn’t that the point of a resolution – to do something you know is good for you no matter how painful it might be?

So get to commenting! I need tunes!

*I reserve the right to not listen to anyone who recommends a Taylor Swift album.

Veggie Tales

My first Christmas off meat was actually pretty successful. I’m fortunate in that my family was willing to compromise on a few things, like mushroom gravy instead of beef gravy and a quiche without bacon, and I’m glad I have parents who will trek to the hippie grocery store a town over to find my Christmas dinner (thanks Dad!) and find me a veggie burger at a butcher shop (thanks Mom!).

I think the hardest thing so far hasn’t been missing meat – I feel really good about my decision to cut it out of my diet – but the fact that “vegetarian” sometimes feels like “pain-in-the-ass picky eater.” And I don’t care how nice and gracious I am, to some extent, it feels like I’m telling people their food isn’t good enough for me. My favorite thing about food has always been its capacity to bring people together to share a common meal, and while I am perfectly happy with the food I’m eating, it definitely feels a bit like I’m missing out on being part of the communal bread breaking. I come from a family with a deep appreciation for meals (my grandfather was notorious for planning dinner during lunch, and cultivated a taste for everything from frogs legs at a five-star restaurant to IHOP) and it stings just a bit to know that sometimes I won’t be sharing that with them like I used to.

But all in all, I’d say my first veggie Christmas was great – at the end of the day, we still all sat down at the dinner table, had some amazing wine and ate far more than we needed to. And now I’m going to have to make some lame resolution about getting my thighs under control.
